The aim of this activity is to practice English vocabulary and sentence structure through describing pictures. 

The materials needed are a set of picture cards. Depending on the vocabulary and the grammar section of the unit, the pictures can be different. 

Instructions:

  1. Divide the class into pairs or small groups.
  2. Give each of them a set of picture cards. 
  3. One student in each group chooses a card from the pile and describes the picture to their classmates using as many English words as they can. 
  4. The partners have to listen and try to guess which picture the student is describing. Gestures and facial expressions are not banned, so they can used them in order to give hints. 
  5. Once the partner correctly guess the picture, they switch roles and continue the game. 
  6. At the end, count the number of correct guesses for each group and declare a winner. 
Variations: 
  • For young learners, you can give them a list of words that they can use to describe the pictures
  • For more advanced learners, challenge them to use specific grammar structures like any specific tense. 
  • To make the game more challenging, set a shorter time limit or restrict the number of words the student can use in their description. 
This activity is a fun and engaging way for young English learners to practice their vocabulary and sentence structures in a interactive way. By describing and guessing pictures, students can improve their speaking and listening skills. 

Here you have some examples. All of the following images were created using an AI tool from Canva Slideshow. It is in fact a solid resource to generate images and flashcards for your students. Nevertheless, the AI creates better images for animals and landscapes, the images where people are shown are still a bit unreal.

  1. A very original idea to get to know their oral language skills, I find it very interesting to work on it in the way you have explained, by means of gestures if necessary. On the other hand, I think it's important that you also put an adaptation of the same activity according to the level of difficulty, since with the same material many types of activities can be done. Working on oral expression in this way, with a game, seems to me to be very attractive for the student.

    1. Yes, you are right. With the same material many types of activities can be done. Don't forget that depending on the level of your students you can use more simple flashcards, like an apple, a playground, a football coloured ball... Perhaps the activity shown above with that flashcards is for more advanced students. Nvertheless, as teacher, you can always guide them during the activity or as said in the text, give them examples of words that they can use.

      The aim of the activity is also to let them communicate in English...in any way.

    In fact, it is an activity that I develope as a game during summer camps, and in general...it is an activity that children like! Normally, it is a dynamic that I carry out on rainy days, just like when I have Physical Education class and I am forced to teach the class in the classroom itself! All the best.

    I think that you did a good job, your activites are very easy to realize and useful at the same time and some of them is so original as the Harry Potter's audiobook, it looks very entertained. I like this one a lot too because it's so simple and you can do it with a lot of pictures, it's like an activity that you can always do and no to be boring from my opinion.
